Neuroscience-informed psychotherapy integrates current understandings of the brain, nervous system, stress physiology, learning, and emotional regulation into traditional psychotherapy approaches. Rather than focusing only on thoughts, emotions, or behavior in isolation, this approach examines how chronic stress, trauma, neurodevelopmental differences, culture, and lived experiences shape nervous system responses and patterns over time.

 

What sets neuroscience-informed psychotherapy apart is its emphasis on understanding why interventions work, how stress affects the brain and body, and how therapy can be adapted more effectively across different nervous systems, identities, and real-world experiences.

Understanding Stress and the Nervous System

A neuroscience-informed model of stress and regulation helps explain how the brain and nervous system respond to threat, uncertainty, chronic stress, and overwhelming experiences. Rather than viewing emotional reactions or behaviors in isolation, this model examines how stress responses can influence attention, emotions, thinking patterns, physical sensations, and decision-making in real time.

 

It also recognizes that cultural experiences, environments, and social learning can shape how stress is perceived, interpreted, expressed, and responded to across individuals and communities.
